2009 Summer Bulletin 03

Happy Australia Day everyone and happy Chinese New Year.  It definitely is the time for celebrations.  Not to mention festivals and gigs.  If you're interested in what's going on in the city, check out the City of Sydney webpage for the free celebrations and activities in China Town and various locations for Australia Day.  I do apologise for the delay in sending out this bulletin.  Yesterday disappeared far too quickly and this morning was spent eating the scones I made with the lemon herb in the vege box from a week ago!  Thank you to those that submitted contributions for the 'Community' section.  One in particular - I hope someone volunteers Jutta.  I also received a number of enquiries which I don't think managed to reply to in time.  As I don't monitor this inbox regularly throughout the week I have included the email addresses in the relevant sections.  Please also find the minutes from the Thoughtful Foods Meeting.

Info session for getting involved in 2009
By Chris Moore
Have you thought about getting a bit more involved in the coop? We need new co-ordinators for 2009, and this is the time to put up your hand! We'll explain what the various roles entail, and how we'll be training and supporting you. The idea is to have a larger co-ordinating collective this year, so that each person is making less of a commitment, but everything still gets done. If you want to see your coop flourish this year, come along!

Where: Meet at the coop
Day: This Tuesday 27th Jan
Time: 5:45pm for a 6pm start

Vegetarians Wanted for Research on Intestinal Microbes
I am a Ph.D.student from Vienna, Austria, and currently doing a research practicum at UNSW.  I am investigating the effects of different diets and lifestyles on the human intestinal microbes.  My previous results suggest that the gut microbes of vegetarians produce higher amounts of health-promoting substances (i.e. butyric acid).  My aim is to further investigate which microbes are involved in the metabolism of butyric acid using a method that has recently been developed by the working group of Dr. Mike Manefield at UNSW.  I am looking for a vegetarian who would be willing to donate stool for my research and who has not taken any antibiotics within the last year (or at least the last 3 months).
If you think that my research is not entirely a shit-project, and you have time, I would be very happy if you would support my investigation with a little bit of poo.  You would be required to come to UNSW twice approximately at the beginning of February and mid February to deliver a fresh stool sample.
