2009 Summer Bulletin 06

We had a Friday 13th this week! I do hope it passed by reasonably misfortune-less for everyone.  I say 'reasonably' since no day is ever perfect for everyone, right?  It was one year on from Kevin Rudd's apology and at our work there also seemed to be a flurry of fundraising for the fire victims.  Strange that in our section we had afternoon teas (bought from Coles, since they were donating their profits) and donation tins going around, all for the fires in Victoria, but the apology to the stolen generation went by largely unnoticed.  It really seems to polarise people.  I can by no means claim to be an expert on Australian aboriginals with an in depth understanding of their history and how it has impacted issues they face today, nor of litigation and the legal system in general.  Yet when I hear people still say 'it doesn't mean anything', 'we didn't do anything so why should we apologise?', 'they have to be careful what words they use because then they could start sueing' it really annoys me.  I was there, outside Parliament House last year, and I was touched.  The emotion felt by people was incredibly moving.  It did mean something.

Anyway, while I might have a lot to say, it's been busy at the co-op as well.  Let us move onto Thoughful Food news.  Did you all learn a lot at the training weekend?

You will have until 5pm Thursday March 5 to volunteer some of your time to redeem part (or all!) of the money you have paid.  (One hour equals a ten dollar refund.)  Please keep reading these emails to find out ways you can help out.  (In particular, check out the O-Week announcement below and call out for volunteers in this bulletin!)

O-Week - 23rd -27th November
Your Co-Op Needs You
Next week is O-week and that means it's a perfect time for Thoughtful Foods to be visible in the UNSW community, let everyone know what it's about and recruit new members.  We will have a stall running all week and the shop will also be open Monday to Friday, which means we need you!!
With so many more opportunities to do your shopping this week, why not make the shopping expedition to the co-op take a couple of hours this week.  That way, while you're there, you can lend a hand too.  In fact, why not make a couple of trips to the co-op, each a couple of hours long.  It'll be fun!  This is also your last chance to earn back your Vollies for Veggies money.
Put your name on the roster in the shop or email info@thoughtfulfoods.org.au to sign up for a shift.  If everyone pitches in it will be a a fun and easy week showing what a diverse and buzzing community Thoughtful Foods is.

Working Bee
We will be having a working bee on Tuesday to prepare for O-week.  We'll be painting banners, getting flyers together and all sorts of fun stuff.  From 12pm at UNSW, more specific location tbc but call Chris on 0422521598.

UTSpeaks: Eating the Earth: How should we eat to ensure a sustainable future?
What do obesity, factory farming, fair trade, peak oil, peak phosphorus and climate change have in common? Why might our "pee" one day be worth its weight in gold?

With three expert speakers, this lecture puts our daily dinner table and supermarket choices under the spotlight. It questions the kind of human diet our planet can sustain and looks at how we could reduce demand on global resources
, while maintaining a balanced diet and ethical food industry.  Finally you'll hear about the great global phosphorus crisis. Vital to plant and animal growth, the value of this element is sky-rocketing as supply from a few mines world-wide decreases. Our days of peeing phosphorus down the drain and food production processes demanding an excess of phosphorus may soon be costly habits of the past.
When      Wednesday 18 February 2009
               6.00pm drinks – 6.30pm lecture start concluding 7.50pm
Where     UTS University Hall, UTS Science Building, 745 Harris Street Ultimo (diagonally opposite ABC headquarters)
