Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to another addition of the Thoughtful Foods Bulletin. My weekend just seems to have turned into one of those that feels like it never happened. It's so packed full of things to do that you don't have time to realise you're not at work until suddenly it's Monday morning again. So, I'll keep it short. I'll actually be away for the next two weeks so someone else will be sending out the latest Thoughtful Foods news to you. This is another one of those bulletins packed full with news and information, so, with out further delay, read on, readers:
NEWS
Opening Hours
From Andrew
During O-Week, the shop and stall are open from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, except for Thursday when the shop will be open normal hours (9am to 6pm).
This will be a very busy week, so please be understanding to our dear volunteers who may be a little tired - give them hugs and make them take tea breaks if they look like they need them =)
Then next week (beginning March 2), the week UNSW has confusingly decided to call 'Week Zero', we will return to our usual opening hours. These are:
Tuesday: 10.30am to 4.30pm
Wednesday: 10.30am to 4.30pm
Thursday: 9am to 6pm
If you ever get confused, the Thoughtful Foods website should have up-to-date opening hours on the front page.
O-Week - 23rd -27th February
Your Co-Op Needs You
From Andrew
This coming week is O-Week! This means we have to run a stall and a shop for five whole days! We can not hope to do this without a small (peaceful) army of volunteers - this is where you come in!
O-Week is a great opportunity for you to see what it's like to volunteer in the shop before the busy-ness of semester one kicks in. Or, if you'd like to be more social and meet many, many new people on campus who may be interested in joining our community (or just trying some of our excellent food!), perhaps volunteering an hour or so at the O-Week stall could be just the thing for you!
Whether you come and hang out in the shop or help out at the stall, O-Week is an exciting experience - and one which is excellent for socially awkward people like me (Andrew) to make new friends!
Please put your name down on one of the roster sheets (kept both in the shop and at the stall) or the store roster board if you can put some time into helping out - though we probably won't mind if you just drop by.
I hope to see many of you there!
Vollies for Veggies - Last Week!
From Andrew
This is the last week you need to put in an extra $5 per box for 'Vollies for Veggies'. It is also the last week for you to volunteer and earn back some (or all!) of this extra money you have been paying throughout summer. We'd love it if many of you were able to help out during O-Week (see the 'O-Week volunteers desperately needed' section for details), but if not, check out the 'Volunteer positions available' section for other ways in which you can help - one hour gives you a $10 refund!
5pm Thursday March 5 is the deadline for organising a refund of your 'Vollies for Veggies' money.
The Roster
From Andrew
Our shop roster board is currently looking empty like a dusty street during a western showdown. We don't mind people just dropping by to help out (we've needed all the help we could get on Thursdays, lately), but if you put your name down or call during shop hours and ask someone to write you down for a specific time it helps us to know beforehand when we need volunteers throughout the week.
Please make use of the roster board - I think it's starting to feel a little left out =/
Volunteer Position Available
From Andrew
Please email Andrew if you would like any more information. Gardening
Would you like to play with dirt but you don't have a backyard? Do you want to grow vegetables you don't have the space or sun to grow at home? Do you simply enjoy playing with large, fertile spaces of land? Then how about coming to look after our garden?! It is in desperate need of love and care. Work doesn't have to be regular, and it can be done whenever you feel like it! All we need is someone to help us make practical use of our space - any ideas welcome!
Parking information
Andrew would like someone to do a little research into available parking spaces near the co-op, and their details/restrictions, in order to put the information on the website. Bonus points if you can also (or, instead) compile a list (perhaps with links!) of public transport to and from the campus. He receives many questions on where to park and it would be nice to have a somewhere on the Intorwebz to refer them to.
Box collectors
It has been months since we last asked for people to collect boxes, but we imagine orders will steadily increase over the coming weeks and we foresee a dire need for more boxes of a specific size. If anyone works or studies on campus (or anywhere off-campus, too!), and knows of a source of A4 boxes (the ones which hold five reams of paper) and their lids, such as a copy room or a faculty office, for example, we would very much appreciate it if you could regularly bring them to the co-op - these are perfect for our $20 boxes!
First meeting for the year
From Andrew
We are currently planning to hold regular meetings in one of the ARC meeting rooms, every week on Wednesdays, starting at 6pm. We will be having our first proper meeting for the year this week! We'd love to see many of you there.
If you have anything you'd like to discuss, even if you can not make it to the meeting, email info@thoughtfulfoods.org.au and we'll try to fit it into the agenda. Minutes should be posted in bulletins following the week they are held.
BREAD
From Megan
Starting this Thursday, we're introducing a new bread ordering process. Now when you order your bread, you place a plastic tag with your name and member number into the appropriate envelop at the front counter. Pay for the bread when you place the order. The following week, after you collect your bread, please reuse the tags for your next order (or put them with the other tags until you place your next order).
Please remember that the bread is available only to co-op members. So you MUST write your member number on your tag, or you might not receive your order.
2009 Membership Renewal Reminder
Only one more week left for you to renew your membership for 2009 and continue to receive great discounts in the shop, as well as be eligible to order bread and vegetables. The last day we will be accepting 2009 memberships is Friday the 27th of February.
To renew your membership, come into the shop this Thursday, or drop by anytime during O-Week (23 to 27 February) and pay your $10 yearly fee ($20 for household memberships).
Email information
We have a few new email addresses. The following information will appear on our website shortly, but for now, these are the addresses and what they are used for:
bread@thoughtfulfoods.org.au - If you have any questions about the bread or the ordering process, email this address. This will not be used for making bread orders. membership@thoughtfulfoods.org.au - If you have any questions about membership, or if you would like to be added to the Announcements or Discussions mailing lists, email this address.
Yoga
Thursdays at 2pm outside the co-op.
COMMUNITY
Film screening: A Delicate Balance
(Animal Liberation NSW Fundraiser)
What: Dinner + Movie (plus Q & A with Director Aaron Scheibner)
When: Monday 23rd February, 6:30 pm
Where: Animal Liberation office, Suite 904, Level 9, 32 York Street, Sydney City
Cost: $20 (for both film and dinner at nearby Peace Harmony, a Thai vegan restaurant)
Animal Liberation invites you and friends and family to attend a screening of the new film, 'A Delicate Balance'.
Nominated for several film festival awards and recently selected for the International Film Festival, A Delicate Balance documents the latest discoveries of some of the most prominent experts on nutrition in the world. Over 50 years of research is presented to unravel the mysteries behind the disease epidemic which has struck affluent countries with a vengeance - disease has been escalating over the last 50 years resulting in 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women being diagnosed with cancer. Watching this film will help you make informed choices about your health and the environment around you and how to reduce your personal impact.
A Delicate Balance debunks the myths surrounding the production and consumption of animal products and exposes the harsh realities ...
* Why are you three times more likely to die of colon cancer if you eat meat?
* How is meat production causing water shortage, starvation and poverty?
* Are you inflicting Type 1 diabetes on your children by feeding them milk?
* Why don't our medical schools teach doctors about nutrition?
* Can becoming a vegan really lead to worldwide social equity?
After the film screening, join us for a Question and Answer session with director and producer Aaron Scheibner, and then down the road to Peace Harmony (vegan Thai restaurant).
