Bulletin - Semester 1 Week 1

It has been a strange few weeks working my way back into the routine of student life and watching the co-op returning to its normal opening hours.  But the change is a welcome one; with it comes the social aspect necessary to these situations.  Even for those who, like me, tend to be a little shy, interaction on many different levels just 'happens'.  So, while I'm helping the wider community to grow, I'm also, gradually, conditioning myself to be stronger in my relationships with others.

I wonder what everyone else gets out of their time at the co-op.  It doubt it's just the wonderful food . . . but, then again, I could understand if it was =)

So, onto this week:  We're still removing a few bugs in our communication and semester one organisational plan - which is why you're receiving this bulletin late (sorry guys!) - but it's looking to be an exciting semester full of new projects!  Our garden is to receive a makeover which will help us make use of the space we have, while also providing ways for our members to get involved.  On top of that, one wonderful person has volunteered to organise a brand new recipe book which is hoped to be released within the next six months.  This will give me, at least, the push to prepare new, interesting foods (mental note: don't focus too much on the desserts section).  And this is just the beginning!

I've also just discovered this afternoon that there is a Thoughtful Foods group on Facebook.  (As the guy who looks after IT related stuff, I'm surprised that I didn't know about it earlier - feel free to tell me I'm bad at my job!)  I know we're pretty relaxed about what constitutes volunteer hours but, sorry guys, time spent on our Facebook group will not earn you a discount in the shop!

I think I should get started on the actual content for this week . . .

 NEWS

2009 Memberships

Since our recent call-out, we have received many, many new membership renewals - thanks guys!  Please remember that you can not order bread or vegetables or receive a shop discount unless you are a 2009 membership card holder - the new ones are easily distinguishable as the bright purple ones which stain things and fade when they get wet =)

GST issues

Calling all wonderful vollies doing shifts in the co-op

The GST has been really out the last couple of weeks which is not so great so here is a friendly reminder that we need to make sure items with GST on them get rung through the till properly and, very importantly, get recorded on the GST sheet next to the till. Also a reminder for memberships: if someone is renewing, it is rung through as GST. If someone is signing up for the first time, the shares component gets rung through as membership while the annual fee GST is rung through as GST. There are no discounts on membership (both new and renewal). If you're unsure or confused, please don't be shy and ask a coordinator - after all that's what they are there for.

YOGA

As usual, free yoga is happening Thursdays at 2pm outside the co-op.

EGGS

The egg orders are placed early on Thursday morning.  This means that all orders must be in before Tuesday or they will not be included.  If you can't make it into the shop by the end of Thursday (the last day we are open before Tuesday) to place your order, you can email it to eggs@thoughtfulfoods.org.au.

Eggs are $3.60 per dozen and may receive a member or volunteer discount.  Pay for them when you pick them up.

FRUIT & VEG

Vegetable orders are placed on Wednesday afternoon.  All orders must be in by midday on Wednesday and paid for in advance - just put your money inside your order form.  Fruit and vegetables do not attract a member or volunteer discount as we already sell them at close to 'cost price'.

Vegetable boxes are only available to current (2009) membership card holders.  If you have not renewed your membership for this year, please do so before placing your next order.  Write your membership number clearly on your form.

Boxes can be picked up between 2pm and 5pm on Thursday.  If you can not get your box before 5pm, please call the shop on 9385 6097.

If you have any questions about the process, please email veggies@thoughtfulfoods.org.au or speak to a volunteer in the shop during opening hours.

BREAD

Bread arrives on Thursday morning and must be picked up that day before 5pm.  Orders must be in by the end of the previous Thursday.  Bread must be paid for in advance and is only available to current 2009 members.  It does not attract a member or volunteer discount as it is sold at close to 'cost price' - it's so cheap!

Please talk to a volunteer in the shop if you'd like to place an order.  If you'd like to see a price list, please see the bread page on our website (http://thoughtfulfoods.org.au/bread).

If you have any questions, please email bread@thoughtfulfoods.org.au or speak to a volunteer during opening hours.

THE ROSTER

The roster board (the blackboard outside the shop) is filling up quite rapidly with volunteers who want to do a permanent shift during the semester.  Putting your name down on the roster - for a casual or a permanent shift - is one of the easiest ways to get involved in your co-op, but if you'd like to help out in the shop regularly I recommend putting your name down sooner rather than later, as it increases your chances of being able to help out at a time which is convenient for you.

The roster is transferred to our website at the end of every Thursday, so you can see what times are available in the next few weeks by going to http://thoughtfulfoods.org.au/roster.

VOLUNTEERING

Gardening

If you have an interest in gardening, please watch out for information in our future bulleting for details on a 'gardening bee'.  One of our volunteers has put together a plan which makes use of our gardening space and we will need help some weekends to implement it.  It's sounding quite exciting!

On a slightly relevant note, if you happen to have any useful gardening tools (such as a pitchfork or a shovel) which you don't need and would happily donate to the co-op, we'd be very appreciative!  We can borrow tools as we need them, but having something permanently at the shop would be more convenient.

If you have any questions or comments, please email gardening@thoughtfulfoods.org.au.

WEEKLY MEETING

Our weekly meetings are held in the ARC building (the opposite side of the Roundhouse to Thoughtful Foods - it's big and green and you can't miss it) from 6pm every Wednesday.  If you arrive late there should be someone at the desk to direct you, or a sign on the window with a number to call.  Last week we talked at length about plans for our garden, and it looks as though something positive is going to happen with that space in the very near future!  How exciting!

(The minutes from last week's meeting are attached.)

As Thoughtful Foods is a cooperative, if you have any ideas for projects you'd like to organise which benefit our immediate or wider community, please feel free to discuss them with others or bring your thoughts to a meeting.  This year already appears to be one where big changes are happening.  Come to a meeting to see how you can be a part of it!

A few of the highlights of this week's meeting (may) include: the discussion of a brand new recipe book; more talk on our major garden project; and

COMMUNITY

Sydney Foods Summit
The Sydney Foods Summit is being organised by the Sydney Foods Fairness Alliance. Its a bunch of events happening around NSW from May onwards, culminating in the actual summit which takes place in Surry Hills at the end of October. Its aimed at getting discussion and imput into a sustainable food security policy for Sydney and a bunch of the issues it covers are totally stuff Thoughtful Foods. We will be making a decision about whether to endorse it or not at the meeting on Wednesday. If you can't make it to the meeting and would like to add your two cents please email Monika (willhof@yahoo.com) with your support or dissent by the end of Tuesday. For more info about the summit see the attached info sheet about the Summit..

free skool sydney
To free peoples and friends::
Free Skool Sydney is in its fetal stages of becoming a larger network of activists collectives, affinity groups, skill shares, free classes/information and critical dialogues around the area of Sydney. While there are many radical spaces and events happening, Free Skool functions as a means to direct people even further in those directions and areas.

Thus, Free Skool Sydney hopes to serve as a decentralized network that share skills, information, knowledge, and fun without the conflicts that often manifests in a conventional classroom setting and rather in spontaneous places, community spaces, cafes, warehouses, parks, people's home, over dinner, etc.

Undoubtedly, the project is a response to institutionalised forms of learning and the trajectory of oppression, marginalisation, and conformity that is a product of it. It seeks out an alternative model of learning that can be shared throughout a community without borders.  Education is an opportunity and right for people, not a privilege. More importantly, learning can be fun! And really fun when it is shared with like minded people in an open and safe space.
Free Skool Sydney is an attempt to establish such grounds while supporting an even larger global movement of free skools.

If you are interested in helping out with such projects, the collective, or simply being involved and having fun through skill shares, creative learning, or facilitating spaces, please come to its first meeting.

The Beginning

While many of us are adjusting to lifestyle changes due to the beginning of a new semester - for the large number of readers at home who are not currently engaged in study, feel free to mentally replace terms as appropriate - I think it's important to take the time to sit back, relax and take everything in slowly.  Some swear by 'peppermint', but I personally recommend our 'ginger bliss blend' =)

I sincerely hope this week finds you all well,

Andrew.

P.S. I had a few queries last week about our 'phantom bulletin author'.  Joey is away until next Sunday and it was Cassie who, last week, formally welcomed you into the very confusing 'Week Zero' - but who also forgot to sign her name!
