Hello readers. It's me, Joey, your regular bulletin editor. I'm back! And I'm late!! I'm so sorry! Back from holidays feeling anything but relaxed. I think the normal sequence of events is that people get sick at the beginning of a vacation. The body, by starting to unwind, neglects it's immune defences and any viruses or other bugs it was keeping at bay jump at the opportunity to get their evil little tentacles through the door, or cell wall, or whatever it is they do. This time it's happened in reverse. Back from Bali and 4 days home from work with the worst flu I can remember having in a long time. Did you know that cough syrup works by suppressing the receptors in the brain that make you think you need to cough? Well, actually, I don't know if all syrups work that way but my doctor told me that this one does. Of course then I quizzed him on whether I would now drown in my sleep because my numbed braincells wouldn't be jerking me to action, expelling air from my lungs in the middle of a dreamy sleep. Apparently no: coughing is a primal reflex and if it really needed to, the body would override any syrup action. YEY!
Anyway, I blame my stuffy head for totally forgetting to send this off yesterday. Thank you Andrew and Cassie for filling in for me, and on with the news for this week:
NEWS
Blitzgaarten: Gardening Working Bee
Just a reminder that this Sunday 22 March we are having a working bee for the garden from 10am to 2pm. Volunteer for 2 hours and get a 40% discount! The bee will be all about weeding, preparing the soil, mulching, planting, transplanting, and having a lot of fun.
If you can bring any of the following, that would be awesome: tools, gloves, buckets, watering cans, bricks, chicken wire, mint seeds/cuttings/plants, coriander, loose-leaf lettuce or any indoor/shade plants. If you don't have any of these, come anyway! Please send your RSVP to Fernanda at gardening@thoughtfulfoods.org.au and invite along your friends and family! Thoughtful Foods Cookbook
From Cassie
Five years ago we put out the Pigweed cookbook to celebrate ten years of the co-op. This year we turn fifteen, so obviously a new cookbook is in order. I made a pitch to the meeting last Wednesday and I got back a lot of great suggestions for how to make this happen. I’ve incorporated them into the pitch, which you'll find attached to this bulletin.
If you'd like to contribute recipes, there will be announcements in the bulletin in the coming weeks on how you can do that.
If you’re interested in making the cookbook happen, I’m holding a meeting on Saturday 28 March, 11am at Thoughtful Foods. Please RSVP so you can be contacted if weather forces a change of venue. This is for people who are interested in actively participating in the process of publishing the cookbook. I.e. who want write for it, co-ordinate recipes, help plan the launch, etc.
Boxes and Bags
From Andrew
We've had a bit of help with sourcing boxes for vegetables but we expect to start running low very shortly. It would be great if people who order vegetables (especially the $20 size ones) could start bringing in their own bags to take their orders home and leaving the boxes behind. Of course, in reality it won't happen like this with everyone, but if empty boxes are left at the end of the day we'll be able to maintain a good number of available boxes.
Roster and Weekly Help
From Andrew
Many volunteers have signed up for regular shifts in the co-op! (Thanks guys!) However, we have a few large gaps on Tuesday, Wednesday and late on Thursday. We have many tasks for volunteers to do if they can spare some time and we'd love to see you sign up for a shift! Please check the roster (in the shop or online) to see when your skills can be used!
The roster is transferred to our website at the end of every Thursday, so you can see what times are available in the next few weeks by going to http://thoughtfulfoods.org.au/roster. Training
From Andrew
If you haven't had a training session yet come by for a one hour session from 11am or 3pm on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thursday Help!
From Andrew
Your lovely Thoughtful Foods coordinators are currently trying to fill a large coordinator gap on Thursday afternoons from around 1.30pm to 5.30pm. We need someone who is reliable, at least a little confident with running the register, and able to cope under the (only slight) pressure of our busy Thursday afternoon. We're currently looking into our options but we are concerned that this may begin to be a real problem in the near future. If you'd be interested in finding out more about this role, please contact Andrew (mcnicolandrew@gmail.com).
2009 Memberships
We are no longer accepting pre-2009 memberships on bread orders, vegetable box orders or for granting shop discounts. Please ensure your 2009 membership number is clearly written on your orders or they may not go through. Also, remember to bring your card with you when you shop. These will be checked!
Yoga
Free yoga on the lawn outside the co-op every Thursday at 2pm.
EggsPlease place egg orders before Tuesday or they will not be included. If you can't make it into the shop to place your order, you can email it to eggs@thoughtfulfoods.org.au. Eggs are $3.60 per dozen and may receive a member or volunteer discount. Pay for them when you pick them up.
Fruit & Veg
Please get all orders in by midday on Wednesday. All order must be paid for in advance - money placed inside order form.
Fruit and vegetables do not attract a member or volunteer discount as we already sell them at close to 'cost price'.
Boxes can be picked up between 2pm and 5pm on Thursday. If you can not get your box before 5pm, please call the shop on 9385 6097.
Bread Bread arrives on Thursday morning and must be picked up that day before 5pm. Orders must be in by the end of the previous Thursday and paid for in advance. Again, no member or volunteer discount is available as it is sold at close to 'cost price' - it's so cheap!
Please talk to a volunteer in the shop if you'd like to place an order. If you'd like to see a price list, please see the bread page on our website (
http://thoughtfulfoods.org.au/bread).
Sydney Foods Summit The Sydney Foods Summit is being organised by the Sydney Foods Fairness Alliance. Its a bunch of events happening around NSW from May onwards, culminating in the actual summit which takes place in Surry Hills at the end of October. Its aimed at getting discussion and input into a sustainable food security policy for Sydney and a number of the issues covered correlate quite will with what Thoughtful Foods does. We will be making a decision about whether to endorse it or not at the meeting on Wednesday night (6pm, activist space in the Blockhouse). If you can't make it to the meeting and would like to add your two cents please email Monika (
willhof@yahoo.com) with your support or dissent by the end of Tuesday. For more info about the summit see the attached info sheet about the Summit.
WEEKLY MEETING
Just a reminder that our weekly meetings are held in the ARC building (the opposite side of the Roundhouse to Thoughtful Foods - it's big and green and you can't miss it) from 6pm every Wednesday. If you arrive late there should be someone at the desk to direct you, or a sign on the window with a number to call.

An ending..
Thank you Andrew for those tea recommendations at the closing of last week's bulletin. Still in my little germ box (which some might see as nice bright apartment with a view of a fantastically sunny day outside), with my head still filled with thoughts of tissues and strepsils, I've found that adding half a squeezed lemon and a teaspoon of honey to ginger tea makes it feel extra healthy and healing.
Again, I'm very sorry for the delay in getting this bulletin out. I wish you all a very happy week two of uni.
Joey
