Bulletin - Semester 1 Week 6

It was a dark and stormy night as Joey sat, crouched over her laptop, frantically herding keystrokes into words...

... the grey mist swirled so densely, the brilliant lights of the spacecraft struggled to reach solid ground.  Those few beings unfortunate enough to have been outside of such an uncomfortable evening strained their eyes past the rain as it sliced through the air like wet guillotines.  With a screech so high it made your ears bleed, followed by a dull thud, a stainless steel staircase collapse onto the grass.  The humans gazed on as three serene creatures, dressed in flowing garments and engulfed by a calming green aura, floated towards them.  Just as the last one was descending his foot caught on his gown causing him to tumble, egg shaped head over shovel shaped toe, until he came to rest at the bottom of the last stair.

"Greetings Earthlings.  Take us to your Feeder".

Gently they took the visitors by the hand and guided them to a simple wooden door.  Above the door was a board with a series of characters arranged in a line, reading: THOUGHTFUL FOODS.

Barrels

From Cassie
We are replacing approximately 12 mice-worn barrels with 15 brand-spankin' mice-proof new ones.  Suggestions as to what to do with the old ones will be gratefully received! Currently we are floating the idea to paint them pink and turn them into percussive instruments, to be played and paraded through campus to drum up business (ba-doom-tish!) but I'm sure there are other great ideas out there!
CUPCAKES!
Do you like cupcakes? How convenient! There are now cupcakes (vegan!) at the co-op to raise money for the Thoughtful Foods cookbook. The cupcakes are $2 each (no further discount). If you would like to be involved with the cookbook you can submit  a recipe to cookbook@thoughtfulfoods.org.au or contact publishing@thoughtfulfoods.org.auto help out with the development.
Thunderstorm Warden
From Cassie
The Roundhouse leaks! We've always known this but last Monday potential disaster was averted by the fortuitous presence of Monika in the shop. Because of increasingly sudden and strong storm weather, we have decided to create the role of Thunderstorm Warden - someone who lives close to the uni and can check on the shop in the event of a sudden downpour. If you think you've got the address/time for such a job, please email info@thoughtfulfoods.org.au.
Recipe Call-Out
From Cassie
This week the cookbook is looking for recipes which contain apples, walnuts and/or cinnamon. You can drop the recipe off in the shop, or email it to cookbook@thoughtfulfoods.org.au.  We're offering a free vegan cupcake (to be collected at the shop on Thursday) for the recipe that combines all three ingredients - so don't forget to fill out the cover sheet (attached for electronic submissions; at the shop for recipe-box submissions)!
Of course, any other recipes you have will be warmly received. We haven't received much of a response so far, so now is the time to write out and submit that recipe you've been meaning to get around to! All contributors to the cookbook will receive a discount in the shop (details to be advised) - so submit early and submit often!
A big thank you to the person who slid the Flour Tortilla recipe into the box in the shop - unfortunately, you didn't leave your name or your contact details! If it was you, or you know who submitted it, please email cookbook@thoughtfulfoods.org.au!

Nuclear industry under the spotlight in Sydney
Traditional Owners, trade unions and environment groups are joining forces in Sydney and Wollongong next week to protest an international nuclear industry meeting and call for an end to the Northern Territory radioactive waste dump proposal.
A public meeting in Sydney on Tuesday April 21 will be followed by a protest on Wednesday April 22 at the opening of the 2009 World Nuclear Fuel Cycle conference (see details below).
Muckaty Traditional Owners Dianne Stokes, Mark Lane and Mark Chungaloo have travelled thousands of kilometres from Kalumpurlpa community, near the proposed Muckaty federal nuclear waste dump site in the Northern Territory, to gather support in opposing the dump.
The Muckaty group has repeatedly called on the ALP Government to follow through with its 2007 election commitment to repeal the Commonwealth laws forcing the waste dump on the NT and say national community awareness is needed to ensure this happens.
Dianne Stokes Muckaty Traditional Owner from the Yapa Yapa group says “Top to bottom we got bush tucker right through the country. Whoever is taking this waste dump into our country needs to come back and talk to the Traditional Owners. We’re not happy to have all of this stuff. We don’t want it, it’s not our spirit. Our spirit is our country, our country where our ancestors been born. Before towns, before hospitals, before cities. We want our country to be safe.”
Dave Sweeney, from the Australian Conservation Foundation says "It is ironic that this conference is being opened by Ziggy Switkowski, the head of ANSTO, whose OPAL nuclear reactor remains plagued with technical troubles and has failed to meet key timelines or performance indicators. This highlights the gulf between the promises and the performance of the nuclear industry here and internationally”.
“We will continue to work with the wider community, trade unions, Indigenous people and other stakeholders to resist moves to turn Australia into a uranium quarry and global radioactive waste dump," added Mr Sweeney.
"There is no place for the contested and contaminating nuclear trade in any vision of a sustainable Australia. We call on the ALP Government to immediately scrap the NT waste dump plan", concluded Natalie Wasley, from the Beyond Nuclear Initiative.
Senator Scott Ludlam from the Australian Greens, Arthur Rorris, Secretary of the South Coast Labour Council and Genevieve Kelly , NSW Secretary of the National Tertiary Education Union will also speak at the public meetings.
