Membership

Thoughtful Foods is a co-operative, which means it is owned and run by its members. Members are welcome to make suggestions about the running of the co-op and participate in regular meetings where decisions about the co-op are made. Some co-op services are available only to members, and all members receive a discount when they shop at the co-op. Read on for more info!

Discounts

All Thoughtful Foods members receive a 10% discount on all goods in the co-op unless otherwise marked. Discounts are not applicable to shares, membership fees, fruit and vegetables or bread.

Member-only services

Becoming a member of Thoughtful Foods means you can order fruit and vegetables and bread. Members are also able to volunteer in the shop to receive extra discounts and sell goods they produce at home or grow in their gardens.

How much does it cost?

New memberships cost $25. They consist of a $10 refundable share* in Thoughtful Foods and a $15 annual membership fee. Membership is valid until 1 February the following year. For members who join after July 1, the annual membership fee is reduced to $10, and after November 1 this is further reduced to $5.

Renewing members pay only the membership fee

* A share is part-ownership of the co-op. Each Thoughtful Foods member owns a maximum of one share. Once you have bought a share in the co-op, you do not need to pay for it again, so long as you keep your membership active (shares will be absorbed by the co-op if membership lapses for one year). Shares may be refunded to active members who wish to leave Thoughtful Foods, as long as they have no outstanding debts to the co-op. Share refunds are approved during monthly director meetings and are paid to the member by cheque shortly after. To organise a share refund, see a shop co-ordinator. Shares are non-transferable.

How do I sign up?

Memberships are processed at the Thoughtful Foods shop by filling out a short form. You will then receive a membership number and card. All details must be completed for your membership to be approved - to maintain an accurate membership register, as required under the Co-operatives Act, Thoughtful Foods requires you to provide a current address and current email address. This contact information will be used to provide members with the details of our AGM and to notify members of their addition to the membership register.
